Pushback Mode is a curated look at vintage fashion, arts and culture. We sell actual Vintage pieces. Those pieces are our creative inspiration.
It was a strange, fertile moment. Fashion stopped pretending seams were something to hide — Margiela showed garments inside out, exposed linings, left hems raw. Architecture did the same thing at a bigger scale — buildings by Gehry and the Deconstructivists twisted and fractured the boxes architecture had lived in for decades. Music followed the same instinct: grunge stripped rock back down to something raw and unpolished, right as hip-hop was building entirely new structures out of samples and breaks. And design was quietly getting ready for the biggest shift of all — the first fumbling steps of the digital world that would define everything after it.
None of this happened in isolation. A flannel shirt worn by a Seattle band, a slashed-open blazer on a Paris runway, a jagged titanium museum wall — they're all the same idea, worn differently. Pushback Mode exists to hold that idea in one place: real, wearable pieces from the era, alongside the context that makes them mean something and pieces inspired by them.
What we do
We source clothing from decades past — tailoring, grunge-era basics, early streetwear, pieces with a story irregardless of brand, in the stitching. Each item comes with real context: where it fits in the era, what it's made of, why it looked the way it did. We're not interested in generic vintage. We're interested in pieces that were paying attention to their moment.
Alongside the shop, our journal digs into the wider world these clothes came from — the architects, the albums, the design shifts, the sourcing stories behind what we find. Think of it less as a shop with a blog attached, and more as a small, ongoing magazine that happens to sell clothes.
Why now
The instinct to deconstruct, strip back, and question the polished default hasn't gone anywhere — it just went quiet for a while. We think it's worth another look.
